Sustainable development has emerged as a central global priority in the twenty-first century. Higher education institutions play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development by generating knowledge, developing responsible citizens, and fostering innovation for addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges. In India, the integration of sustainability in higher education has gained importance due to commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This paper examines the role of higher education in advancing sustainable development in India. It discusses the conceptual foundations of sustainable development, the policy framework supporting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and the emerging role of universities in sustainability-oriented teaching, research, and community engagement. The paper also identifies key challenges such as inadequate curricular integration, limited faculty training, insufficient research support, and institutional barriers. Finally, the paper proposes strategic pathways including curriculum reforms, interdisciplinary learning, green campuses, community partnerships, and digital innovation to strengthen sustainability education. The study concludes that higher education institutions must adopt transformative approaches to create environmentally conscious, socially responsible, and economically competent graduates who can contribute to sustainable national development.
