This study critically examine the dual nature of the Quit India movement. it was started off as a non-violent civil disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress and soon unfolding into a dispersed, armed confrontation movement in different parts of the country. The study traces the socio-political context that gave rise to the movement, the patterns of mass movement and the widespread participation of students, peasants, workers and women. It also analyses the response of the British colonial state, which included mass arrests, censorship, violence and the deployment of military force to suppress disagreements. Primary sources such as contemporary newspapers, government records and Indian political leaders like Gandhi, Nehru and Jaishankar Narayana writings as well as major secondary historiography have been used. This study evaluates the significance of the movement in eroding British colonial control and accelerating India's journey towards independence. Ultimately, The Quit India Movement is a powerful example of how collective mass resistance can challenge imperialist oppressor power and change the course of political history.
