This paper investigates a common source of anxiety in difficult conversations: the deep fear of how others perceive us and our ideas. When we are overly worried about being judged, our communication becomes defensive and less effective. The purpose of this study is to explore how the ancient concept of Nishkama Karma—acting with sincerity without fixating on the results—can relieve this anxiety and lead to more authentic dialogue. Our main objective is to develop a new model for communication called “Composed Engagement,” which encourages clarity and empathy by reducing the ego’s need for approval. We use a qualitative approach, drawing on wisdom from classic Indian texts like the Bhagavad Gita and insights from contemporary teacher Swami Sarvapriyananda, to build a practical framework. The implications of this work are meaningful for anyone navigating high-stakes personal or professional conversations, offering a way to communicate with greater presence and less fear. This study is original because it bridges timeless spiritual wisdom with modern communication challenges in an accessible, applicable way.
