E-governance refers to the integrated use of information and communication technology to deliver government information and services to a country's citizens. In e-governance, the "e" stands for 'electronic'. The establishment of the Department of Electronics in 1970 marked the first major step towards e-governance in India, as it focused on 'information' and 'communication'. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has profoundly influenced traditional governance practices. Moving beyond paper-based processes, physical offices, and intermediary-led service delivery, governance is now shifting towards digital platforms, online services, mobile applications, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data, geospatial technology, and digital public infrastructure. This research paper analyses the key opportunities for good governance enabled by information technology—namely transparency, accountability, efficiency, citizen participation, inclusion, corruption control, data-driven decision-making, service delivery, and administrative innovation.
