Abstract India is characterised by extraordinary linguistic, cultural and traditional diversity. Its cultural heritage has historically been transmitted through oral traditions, literature, manuscripts, rituals, festivals, performing arts, crafts and community practices. However, the rapid expansion of digital technology has significantly transformed the ways in which these traditions are preserved, communicated and experienced. Technology has created new possibilities for the documentation and dissemination of cultural heritage while simultaneously raising questions about authenticity, cultural homogenisation, accessibility and the changing relationship between tradition and modernity. This paper examines the interaction between tradition and technology in contemporary India, with particular attention to language, cultural heritage and human well-being. It discusses the role of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, multilingual technologies, social media and digitisation initiatives in preserving and transmitting Indian cultural knowledge. The paper also considers the challenges associated with the digital transformation of culture, including the digital divide, commercialisation, loss of context and the danger of reducing living traditions to digital representations. Initiatives such as BHASHINI and the National Mission for Manuscripts demonstrate how technology can support linguistic inclusion and cultural preservation. The paper argues that tradition and technology should not be understood as mutually exclusive categories. Rather, their productive negotiation can create new forms of cultural participation, accessibility and continuity while maintaining the significance of community knowledge and cultural identity.
